Alliance of Independent Journalists: Press Freedom Declining

KN. In its Early 2026 Report released, the Alliance of Independence Journalists Indonesia (AJI) recorded 89 cases of violence against journalists throughout 2025, ranging from physical violence, digital attacks, intimidation by authorities, to legal lawsuits. AJI Indonesia Chairperson Nany Afrida stated that intervention in newsrooms has increased and tends to be normalized.

This pressure comes from those in power, in the form of requests to remove news stories and pressure not to report on certain issues. Of the 31 cases of physical violence against journalists in 2025, 21 were committed by the police and 6 cases by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). In addition to physical violence, digital attacks were the second largest form of violence with 29 cases, the highest in the last 12 years.
