KN. Indonesia’s President-elect Prabowo Subianto challenged the concern that questions his style of leadership given his previous role as a former special forces’ commander accused of human rights abuses. “Where is the concern about democracy?” he said at the Qatar Economic Forum on Wednesday, adding that the concern “is made up by some people in the press.”

When told that citizens might be concerned that once in a position of leadership, Prabowo will clamp down on democracy, he challenged the host: “Who is concerned?” Prabowo highlighted that he focused on creating welfare and a good life for Indonesian people.
Members of the House Legislative Body met in plenary to discuss the Immigration Bill and the State Ministries Bill, which were proposed as cumulative laws.
Legislative Body Chair Supratman Andi Agtas explained that there were two points of change during the meeting discussions. First, it is a follow-up to the Constitutional Court’s decision that deputy ministers are not required to be from career groups, and second, the president has the authority to determine the number of ministries under him.
Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto told the Qatar Economic Forum that Indonesia can easily achieve eight percent economic growth within two to three years. Indonesia’s economy grew an annual 5.11 percent in the January-March quarter, the highest growth rate in three quarters, government data showed earlier this month. Prabowo said he would uphold the tradition of “prudent fiscal management”, saying he intended to keep the fiscal deficit ceiling at three percent of gross domestic product (GDP).
The Press Council and constituents requested that the discussion of the draft revision of Law No. 32/2002 on Broadcasting, which was currently being implemented in the House of Representatives, be postponed.
Press Council Chair Ninik Rahayu raised the issue of overlap between the draft revision of the Broadcasting Law and Law No. 40/1999, which governs the press. For example, according to Ninik, there are efforts to distinguish journalistic products from traditional mass media and media based on telecommunication frequencies.
In fact, the Press Law makes no distinction between existing mass media platforms. Then, she said, efforts to mediate journalistic product disputes are carried out by the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).
Communications and Information Ministry Director General of Information and Public Communication Usman Kansong hopes that the process of Broadcasting Bill revision can run well, and that the House (DPR) can accept opinions from various parties, such as the government and the press council, to implement meaningful participation. He also claimed that the government does not intervene in the controversy of the Draft Broadcasting Law which was deemed to interfere with press freedom.
Indonesia is poised to make revisions to the Constitutional Court, including requiring its judges to be evaluated and approved by the president and parliament for continuation, which legal experts say could expose it to political influence.
According to M. Taufiqurrahman, Editor-in-chief of The Jakarta Post, bureaucracy has been the bane of everyone’s existence for as long as governments have existed, and there’s nothing more trying in life than applying for a visa to visit a foreign country.
While some countries have offered manageable ways for foreigners to get visas, there is a group of nations that has gone the extra mile to set up a system that makes life difficult for anyone trying to gain entry.
The United States, however, is in a league of its own. I don’t know what went wrong with my visa appointment, but it was certainly one of the most harrowing experiences in recent years.
