KN. The Indonesian government under outgoing President Joko Widodo plans to relocate its capital away from Jakarta, a city that has been riddled with environmental and population challenges in recent years.
The new seat of government will be situated on Borneo Island, Nusantara. This ambitious $32-billion project pledged to redistribute wealth and resources across the archipelago and catapult Indonesia.
Unpacking the economic and political implications of this move, GJIA sits down with Dr. Deden Rukmana, an expert on urbanization, housing, transportation, and development challenges in Indonesian cities.
The Indonesian government is working to build a smart defense system in the Nusantara Capital City, or IKN. This system will be developed through coordination between ministries and other related parties.
“We are able to realize the IKN defense system as per what has been established, namely the Smart Defense System,” said Deputy for National Defense Coordination at the Ministry of Political, Legal and Security Affairs Rear Admiral of TNI Kisdiyanto as quoted by Antara.
According to the 2022-2024 master plan for the IKN’s state defense system, the government must up the defense in the new capital city because the president will be seated in IKN starting July this year, Kisdiyanto said. Furthermore, in 2025, the government must focus on enhancing both the IKN defense system and the country as a whole.
Bappenas head Suharso Monoarfa said that as of April 2024, the IKN Nusantara development progress has reached 81 percent, with the core area of the government center (KIPP) ready for the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony on August 17.
The Head of Indonesia’s National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Suharso Monoarfa, announced that as of April 2024, the development progress of Indonesia’s future capital, Nusantara (IKN), has reached 81 percent.
“We reported on the progress of IKN development because Bappenas is responsible for drafting the master plan. So, we informed President Joko Widodo that the development had reached nearly 81 percent,” Suharso said in Jakarta.
In his report, Suharso mentioned that the ongoing Phase I development of IKN is taking place in the core area of the government center (KIPP) in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan. This area is targeted to be ready for the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony on August 17.
Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono said the government had allotted Rp355 billion to build a memorial park in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN). The budget, he said, already includes the costs of building Beranda Nusantara.
Basuki said that the memorial park could be visited by state guests during the commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence Day on August 17. According to the minister, the memorial park will be developed as IKN does not yet have a national hero burial site.
“It (the memorial park) will be made like a museum showing the history of the capital transfer,” said Basuki.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan targets to finish solving land issues in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) project by the end of May. Luhut said the government would prepare relocation and compensation for 2,086 hectares of land with unclear status.
“No citizens are harmed (in the process),” said Luhut when met after a meeting with the Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono.
