Repatriation of Illegal Cultural Artifacts

KN-JAKARTA, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires ad interim to Indonesia Peter Haymond said at the U.S.–ASEAN Conference on Combating Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property in Jakarta said that the U.S. Embassy remains committed to tackling the illegal trade of cultural property, as many criminals continue to traffic artifacts from Indonesia. Haymond emphasized that such acts go beyond selling art — they harm communities, fuel corruption, undermine the rule of law, and erode cultural heritage. One of the U.S. efforts to address this issue is strengthening border security as the first line of defense against all forms of illegal trafficking.
