KN. Forest and land fires have burned 64,341 hectares across Indonesia, with most of the affected areas concentrated in five provinces in Sumatra and Kalimantan, according to National Police data.
Around 62 percent of the total burned area has been extinguished and brought under control, said National Police Operational Development Bureau Chief Brig. Gen. Auliansyah Lubis. Efforts to contain the fires involve joint teams comprising the National Police, National Military (TNI), National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Forestry Ministry, volunteers, and local communities, he added.
President Prabowo said that the government would take firm legal action against anyone proven to have deliberately caused forest and land fires in several parts of Kalimantan. Prabowo made the statement when asked whether corporations could have deliberately started the fires. He also said the government continues to strengthen firefighting efforts on the ground.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said that the Indonesian government was maintaining communication with neighboring countries following the impact of forest and land fires in Kalimantan, which had caused transboundary haze. He said Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono was conducting the communication through both informal and formal channels. Malaysia had previously said it would pursue diplomatic channels to address the transboundary haze originating from forest and land fires in Indonesia.
