Indonesian Ministers at Odds over Mass Bank Account Opening Plan

KN. Indonesia’s finance and senior economic ministers have publicly disagreed over the scale of a scheme to ensure that every citizen over 17 has a bank account, highlighting the government’s lack of consistency in policymaking.

President Prabowo Subianto unveiled the plan at a cabinet meeting on Sept. 7, with officials citing it as a way to streamline direct welfare payments and boost financial inclusion. State-owned lenders Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) were asked to provide the accounts.

Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto said every Indonesian, all those age 17 and over, would receive an account including those who already have one. But Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said on that accounts might be provided only to people without one. Population records would be matched against banking and other databases to identify them.
