From lithium and aluminum to solar power and gasification, Indonesian coal miners are increasingly expanding into new businesses as external volatility and domestic policy uncertainty make their diversification strategy more urgent than ever. Indonesia is the world’s largest exporter of thermal coal, which feeds power plants, and for a while now local miners have been under pressure from lenders and investors to decarbonize and diversify. The energy crisis triggered by the U.S. and Israel war on Iran has helped coal prices rebound from multi-year lows, giving miners bigger profits in the first half of 2026 and thus more cash to accelerate their diversification drives. |
