KN. President Prabowo Subianto said that Indonesia could decide to withdraw from the Board of Peace formed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The president will finalize this decision if the board’s actions result in further harm to the people of Gaza, Palestine.
Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin confirmed that Indonesia’s involvement in the Board of Peace represents a strategic move to accelerate peace and reconstruction in Gaza. Sjamsoeddin characterized the decision as a direct fulfillment of the 1945 Constitution’s mandate to actively foster world peace. Indonesia stands ready to deploy up to 20,000 troops as part of an international force. The government is currently weighing two legal frameworks for the deployment: a United Nations mandate or the Board of Peace established by U.S. President Donald Trump.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said the government will open dialogue with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) following the council’s request for Indonesia to withdraw from the US-backed Board of Peace (BoP). “We will later hold dialogue with MUI,” Prasetyo said on the sidelines of a coordination meeting between the central and regional governments in Bogor, West Java. He said the government respects MUI’s views and considers dialogue an important avenue to explain Indonesia’s decision to join the international council.
Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Chair for Da’wah Affairs Cholil Nafis said in a press statement quoted on Sunday that the MUI is concerned that the $1 billion contribution required to join the Board of Peace could amount to a form of “tribute” to parties that perpetuate the conflict in Palestine. “This peace narrative is illusory. There is already an occupying power (Israel), yet Indonesia is being asked to pay in order to sit at the same table. This violates the constitutional mandate against colonialism,” Cholil said.
