KN. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has formally opposed the ruling coalition’s proposal to eliminate direct regional elections, emphasizing the importance of maintaining voters’ rights. During its national meeting in Ancol, North Jakarta, party chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri argued that transferring election power to regional legislative councils undermines democracy and the principles of the 1998 Reform movement. She highlighted that indirect elections would violate popular sovereignty and deprive citizens of their democratic right to choose their leaders.
