KN. Frustration over the central government’s slow post-flood recovery efforts in Aceh may have contributed to a clash between residents and security personnel during an annual peace commemoration in Banda Aceh on Saturday.
The event marked the 2005 Helsinki peace agreement between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement, which ended decades of separatist conflict. Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who helped broker the deal, downplayed concerns that the incident signaled a return of separatism, saying it instead reflected dissatisfaction with Aceh’s current regional leadership.
