Death of Bambang Setiyawan, GRIB Jaya, and the Arrest of 322 People Following August 27 Demonstrations

KN. The August 27 demonstrations in front of the DPR complex in Jakarta escalated into clashes and unrest that spread to areas including Pejompongan and Palmerah, where public facilities and police posts were damaged or burned. Police said 322 people were arrested in connection with alleged vandalism, violence, and other offenses, with 48 subsequently named as suspects. One resident, 59-year-old Bambang Setiyawan, died after allegedly being assaulted in Pejompongan, while police continue to investigate the circumstances of his death and identify those responsible. Bambang is so far the sole reported fatality linked to Thursday’s protests.
