KN-NEWYORK, The United States (US) national debt officially had surpassed US$39 trillion (Rp 661,440 trillion) in March 2026. The debt ballooned following a surge in spending stemming from the US-Israel-Iran conflict. This burden places additional pressure on budget priorities, from tax cuts and defense spending to debt management.
For the record, the US population currently stands at 342.62 million. With this mounting debt burden, the US debt per capita has now reached US$113,875, or approximately Rp 1.93 billion. This means that every newborn in the US will bear a debt burden of Rp 1.93 billion. Of course, this is not a literal translation, as the US debt will be paid from taxes and other revenues.
US government debt has increased more rapidly at the start of Donald Trump’s second term than at the beginning of his first term. This is evident from data published on FiscalData.treasury.gov, the official US government website managed by the U.S. Treasury. One indicator used is Debt to the Penny, a daily record showing the total US federal debt.
The increase in debt during the Trump era can be calculated by comparing total debt at two points in time. To see the development since the beginning of Trump’s second term, the debt position in December 2024 was used as the starting point, then compared with the position on March 10, 2026, when the last debt data was released.
Based on this data, total US government debt at the end of December 2024 was recorded at US$36.2 trillion. This figure then rose to approximately US$38.9 trillion on March 10, 2026. Thus, in the first 14 months of Donald Trump’s second term as president, US government debt increased by approximately US$2.7 trillion.
If converted using an assumed exchange rate of Rp16,960 per US$1, this value is equivalent to approximately Rp45,792 trillion. If calculated per day, Trump incurred debt of Rp 110.6 trillion per day for 414 days from his inauguration on January 20, 2025, to March 10, 2026.
The United States government’s debt, if Donald Trump is not immediately impeached for his selfish and impulsive policies, such as the war against Iran and the subsequent Iranian war against Cuba, will clearly increase the misery of American citizens. Therefore, according to international observer Linda Rahmawati, the “No Kings” demonstrations in 50 cities in the US and across Europe against Trump and Netanyahu carry significant relevance, demanding that Trump’s mandate be immediately revoked by the American people and Netanyahu removed by the Israeli people.
