Indonesia must help Palestine’s people including Gaza’s residents

KN. Indonesia is ready to send humanitarian aid to Gaza, including medical teams, and is also prepared to receive wounded victims, trauma survivors, and orphaned children.

The president said that he would coordinate with the Minister of Foreign Affairs regarding the procedures. He added that Indonesia is ready to accommodate up to 1,000 Palestinians for evacuation to Indonesia as part of the first wave.

President Prabowo Subianto departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Jakarta, in the early hours for a series of state visits to the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan.

“I am doing this because there have been many requests for Indonesia to play a more active role in supporting and seeking a resolution to the conflict in Gaza and the Middle East as a whole,” said Prabowo. For the Middle East trip, Prabowo is accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya.

Indonesia is ready to temporarily shelter Palestinians hit by the war in Gaza, President Prabowo Subianto said estimating there could be 1,000 in the first wave, as he started a trip to the Middle East and Turkey.

Prabowo said he has instructed his foreign minister to quickly discuss with the Palestinian side and other parties about how to evacuate impacted Palestinians to Indonesia. “We are ready to evacuate the wounded, the traumatized, the orphans,” Prabowo said, adding the victims would be in Indonesia temporarily until they have fully recovered from their injuries and the situation in Gaza was safe for their return.

Before departing for the UAE, Prabowo announced that he would send FM Sugiono to meet with Palestinian officials to follow up on his directive. “We are also ready to receive the wounded victims, and we will soon send the Foreign Affairs Minister to discuss with the Palestinian government and local authorities how the implementation will proceed,” said Prabowo, without confirming timing.

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia’s plan to accept approximately 1,000 Palestinian refugees from the Gaza Strip is only for temporary evacuation and not a permanent relocation. Sugiono also said that Indonesia consistently advocates for a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as well as the cessation of all violence.

Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Deputy Chair Anwar Abbas questioned Prabowo’s plan to accommodate Palestinian residents from Gaza, noting that the idea of relocating Palestinians out of Gaza originated from U.S. President Donald Trump and is supported by Israel. He warned that such a move aligns with Israel and the U.S.’s objective to depopulate Gaza.

House Commission I member from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction, Sukamta, expressed his support for Prabowo’s plan, which reflects Indonesia’s readiness to evacuate wounded victims and orphaned children from Palestine.  He emphasized that this humanitarian evacuation is fundamentally different from Trump’s “crazy” idea of relocating Gaza residents.

NU Executive Board Chair Ahmad “Gus Fahrur” Fahrur Rozi expressed PBNU’s support for President Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to evacuate 1,000 Gaza residents to Indonesia in response to Israel’s military aggression, calling the move a noble act. However, Gus Fahrur also noted that Prabowo’s statement should serve as a wake-up call for Arab countries, which, he said, should ideally be the primary destination for Gaza evacuees given the shared language and cultural similarities.
