Tariff Negotiations

KN. Indonesia’s National Economic Council Chair Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan met with U.S. Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington, D.C, a week ago. The meeting, according to Luhut’s Instagram post on Friday, covered growing opportunities for economic and investment cooperation between the two countries — from energy and manufacturing to high-tech sectors that create jobs. “The negotiation progress on the Reciprocal Tariff Agreement is currently being formulated by both teams. There’s still much to refine, but the discussion on tariffs continues in a constructive and mutually beneficial direction,” Luhut wrote.

Economic Affairs Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto said that trade tariff negotiations between Indonesia and the United States have entered the finalization stage. He explained that the Indonesian government is currently engaged in intensive discussions on the legal drafting of the trade agreement with the United States. According to Airlangga, the draft agreement includes provisions for potential zero tariffs on imports from Indonesia particularly for commodities that cannot be cultivated in the United States, such as palm oil, cocoa, and similar products. Airlangga hopes both sides can reach an agreement within the next two to three weeks.
