Indonesia-China’s economic and health cooperation

KN-JAKARTA, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa met Chinese Ambassador Wang Lutong to discuss strengthening economic cooperation and planned taxes on online products from China. He raised concerns about the growing dominance of Chinese goods in Indonesian e-commerce, noting it undermines local businesses due to structural disadvantages. Purbaya said the government is recalculating the proposed tax to better balance domestic and foreign interests while protecting the local market.

Indonesia is partnering with China through the Indonesia–China Food & Ecosystem Forum 2026, held alongside the 14th China Food Trade Fair in Wuhan, to strengthen its position as a global food production hub. The initiative aims to boost exports, attract investment, and build a more integrated and sustainable food ecosystem while reducing import dependence. Key outcomes include new agreements to expand market access and promote Indonesian products, alongside efforts to enhance innovation, supply chains, and culinary tourism. The meeting underscored both countries’ commitment to strengthening cooperation in maintaining regional stability. During the discussion, Chen expressed China’s intention to deepen collaboration with partner countries, including Indonesia, to enhance security stability across Asia and globally. In response, Prabowo emphasized that regional stability is a key foundation for sustainable economic growth.

Indonesia is seeking to deepen cooperation with China in health technology, with a focus on tuberculosis control, traditional medicine, biotechnology, and the use of AI and digital tools in healthcare.  Health Miniser Budi Gunadi Sadikin met with China’s National Health Commission Minister Lei Haichao in Beijing, expressing Indonesia’s intention to accelerate digital transformation in its healthcare system, particularly in the management of patient clinical data.  Budi noted that Indonesia could draw lessons from China’s success in reducing tuberculosis prevalence from moderate to low levels. The visit is the latest in a series of deepening bilateral engagements between Jakarta and Beijing, which have expanded well beyond trade and investment into areas like public health and emerging technology.

China has urged Indonesia to take on a greater role in defending international law and multilateral cooperation, as confidence in global institutions continues to erode. Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN Wang Qing called for closer collaboration between the two countries to uphold the principles of the United Nations and safeguard the international order. “Indonesia should play a bigger role both internationally and regionally,” Ambassador Wang noted, while reaffirming China’s commitment to the “Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence”, which emphasize equality among nations and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
