KN. Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) released the results of monitoring corruption trends in 2023. The results are that in the last five years (2019-2023) there has been an increase in both the number of cases (791) and the number of suspects (1,695).
Furthermore, from the cases that have been monitored, potential state losses reached IDR28.4 trillion, potential bribery and gratification amounted to IDR422 billion, potential illegal levies or extortion amounted to IDR10 billion, and potential assets disguised through money laundering amounting to IDR256 billion.
Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto disclosed the government’s strategy to finance the new capital city, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), during the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha. He clarified issues related to the projected cost of the ambitious project, amounting to $35 billion or approximately IDR501 trillion over a 25-30 year period.

Indonesia has commenced the third developmental phase of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) project. Head of the IKN Infrastructure Development Task Force, Danis Sumadilaga, said there are a total of 25 project packages in phase III of IKN development, including the construction of the offices of the National Police and the Ministry of Defense.
“The physical progress of batch 3 (phase three) is already at 5.4 percent,” said Danis at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing on Friday, May 17, 2024.
The budget for IKN batch III development is Rp22 trillion. In total, the three project phases are expected to spend Rp74 trillion with 96 project packages. Danis detailed that there are 40 packages in the first developmental batch totaling Rp24.8 trillion. One of the projects included in this contracted batch is the State Palace. The government aims to complete its development by August for the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony.
President-elect is pushing for a big government for when he takes over the helm in October, but it is not so much because he has ambitious big programs to run, but more because he needs to parcel out cabinet posts to political parties, individuals and institutions that helped him win the February election. As if that is not enough, Prabowo is inviting some of the political parties that had supported rival candidates in the race to join his ruling coalition, so he has even more strategic government jobs to give out. While AI has the power to be destructive to individuals, it could unravel whole societies too, according to electoral commissioner Tom Rogers. Speaking to a senate inquiry on Monday, he said artificial intelligence was already affecting elections around the world.
“Countries as diverse as Pakistan, the United States, Indonesia and India have all demonstrated significant and widespread examples of deceptive AI content.”
There are two major ways in which the 2024 elections can be assessed. First are the relations between factions of the political elite, including the prospects for stability among that elite. Second are the relations between that elite as a whole, represented by all the parliamentary parties, and that section of politically active Indonesia outside the parties, referred to as “Masyarakat sipil” (“Civil Society”). At the moment, it can be noted that the most widespread political activity is speculation, even as more and more political actors firm up their decisions.
The contestation that took place in the 2024 elections was among rival factions within the broad Indonesian elite. Every coalition of parties nominating Presidential candidates included parties participating in the current Joko Widodo government. The two parties outside the Widodo government, Democrat Party (PD) and the Party of Justice and Welfare (PKS), had voted with the government on most occasions. Now they found themselves in coalitions alongside parties of the government. There were no outsiders among any of the parties supporting Presidential candidates.

Terrorism remains a challenge as a transnational organized crime for the new government of Indonesia in the 2024-2029 period. Under the leadership of Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the new government must map the challenges of terrorism handling precisely, so that they can be anticipated and dealt with in a measurable manner. In the Global Terrorism Index 2024 of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Indonesia is currently placed 31st, or up seven ranks, from the previous index.
