US tarrifs

KN. IPB University economist Sahara urged the government to immediately issue written confirmation on the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between Indonesia and the United States as the deadline nears. She said the pact, signed February 19, will take effect 90 days after both countries complete domestic legal procedures, leaving Indonesia limited time to respond formally. Sahara said confirmation is crucial as uncertainty could impact domestic industries, the trade balance, and inflation. She also cautioned that commitments to boost imports from the U.S. risk shifting trade patterns and potentially triggering responses from other partners.

The Trade Ministry responded to the U.S. decision to impose preliminary anti-dumping duties of 35.17% on Indonesian solar panels, emphasizing that the measure is part of an ongoing investigation. Director of Trade Safeguards Reza Pahlevi Chairul said the government respects the process, will continue monitoring it, and is committed to ensuring it complies with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. He also urged affected companies to cooperate fully, noting the government is prioritizing active engagement over formal objections while the investigation is still underway.

Economic Affairs Coordinating Ministry Secretary Susiwijono Moegiarso said that the ministry will meet with the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Office on May 12 to discuss the continuation of the U.S. tariff investigation. Susiwijono stated that the meeting is a normal procedure that must be followed as part of the trade investigation process. The Indonesian government prepared and submitted its written response to the investigation on April 15, along with supporting documents requested by the United States.

During the opening of the Indonesia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) National Conference, Trade Minister Budi Santoso said Indonesia is pushing to deepen trade ties with the United States after decades of stalled negotiations. He emphasized that the U.S. market remains critical and cannot be ignored, even as Indonesia seeks to balance national interests and secure better terms in ongoing talks.

During an investment dialogue with the East Java Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in Surabaya, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) offered investment cooperation opportunities to business players in East Java to support infrastructure development across several priority sectors, including energy and mineral resources, transportation, digital infrastructure, and smart city development. Adrian Bastien, a representative of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, said the activity aims to strengthen Indonesia–U.S. collaboration on high-quality infrastructure.

Indonesian Consul General Yohpy Ichsan Wardana said that the Consulate General in San Francisco is exploring cooperation with Alaska, particularly in energy and natural resources. He said Alaska offers strengths in energy, fisheries, logistics, and resource management, while Indonesia brings a large market, strong economic growth, and a strategic position in Southeast Asia. He added that the April 27–28 visit marked an initial step toward a more structured cooperation framework.
